Raku is a unique pottery style with origins from 16th century Japan. Originally used for traditional ceremonies, Raku was prized for embodying the Zen tranquility and visible beauty.
The Raku process is exciting and dynamic. Pieces are heated to 1800 degrees F in an outdoor kiln. Some are fully glazed, others only partially glazed. While still hot, the pots are removed from the kiln and placed into containers filled with combustible materials, like sawdust, leaves and newspaper. Flames surround each pot and it is the fire and smoke which provide color and surface texture to the form. The combination of materials creates one-of-a-kind effects.
Raku pieces will not hold water and are considered as a decorative art form.
Michael makes pottery using stoneware clay fired to 2200 degrees F resulting in durable, functional ware that is both microwave and dishwasher safe.
